How can a hostel be green and sustainable

Behind the idea of having a hostel is Rosindo & Inna. After living in Aruba and the Netherlands, Rosindo found in Georgia his lovely wife Inna living in a country with the perfect climate and nature to settle down and open a hostel with a complete green purpose. Their love for nature made them decide to protect it and make everything as green as possible. They choose the capital Tbilisi to open the Why Me? hostel and rooms, the first “green” hostel in Georgia. A quote on the second level of the venue says: Don’t dream your life, live your dream.

The first thing to become sustainable is using the water wisely. The hostel has a 3000 liters tank for rain water and a 1000 liters heat exchanger for future solar panels to create hot water. During the rainy season the hostel runs fully with rain water, in the dry season they only need to buy water when the hostel is fully booked for a couple of months. Beside the rainy water his showers and sinks are all with press buttons. This means that while taking a shower the water will stop automatically and then you will need to press again. According to him it psychologically forces the person to spend less water.

The house walls and roof are completely protected by thermic isolation, for both hot and cold weather. When is hot outside is cool inside, when is cold outside the temperature is stable inside. The lights in the room are turned by presence and in the rooms the lights are very weak in the first 3 minutes. This is to save energy and to be considerate with others that might be sleeping.

Now, he is investing in solar panels, this way he will get clean energy and won’t need to buy them from the companies. While Inna is managing the hostel and rooms, Rosindo takes travelers on long hikes around the country.
